Johannesburg, 28 October 2014 – Airports Company South
Africa has appointed Sello Mmakau as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO).
The CIO position is a newly created role for Airports Company South Africa
following the company’s leadership realignment earlier this year.
Airports Company South Africa’s Chief Executive Officer Bongani Maseko said:

technology strategy is ideally aligned to sustainably support the growing

Previously CIO at the Department of Home Affairs, Mmakau was instrumental in
improving the department’s back-end systems performance, enabling it to better
deliver on its mandate to the public and enhance its reputation. During his
almost six years at Home Affairs, he was also involved in collaborating with the
banking industry to develop automated online fingerprint verification and
implemented the new South African Smart ID card. The SA smart ID card won
Regional ID Document of the Year Award 2013 in an annual High Security Printing
conference held in Asia.
Mmakau has a BA degree, a Master of Business Leadership degree and several
IT-related qualifications. Prior to his position at Home Affairs, he worked at
the Department of Health, the State Information Technology Agency and at Sasol
Ltd. He was selected as the Visionary CIO of 2012 by the Computer Society of
South Africa, Gartner, ITWeb and the Gordon Institute of Business Science.
