AIRPORTS COMPANY SOUTH AFRICA APPOINTS ITS FIRST CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Johannesburg, 7 April 2014 – Airports Company South Africa today announced the appointment of Tebogo Mekgoe as the company’s first Chief Operating Officer (COO). Mekgoe, the current General Manager of O.R. Tambo International Airport is expected to officially assume his new position with immediate effect.

Chief Executive Officer  of Airports Company South Africa, Bongani Maseko, said, “Mr Mekgoe has extensive aviation and managerial experience, gained through the various positions he has held within Airports Company South Africa. This appointment follows the Company’s decision to create a new leadership structure and is a strategic decision by the business to address operational efficiencies and effectiveness. As General Manager of the biggest airport on the continent, O.R. Tambo International, Mekgoe has been instrumental in ensuring that the company’s flagship airport meets its business objectives and customer expectations.”

Mekgoe started his career as a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer at O.R. Tambo International Airport. Other roles he held include Head of Department: Surface Maintenance, Airport Manager: East London Airport and Assistant General Manager: O.R. Tambo International Airport. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Mekgoe was head of a special task team to oversee Operations for the event at the airport.

Maseko said that the company will be announcing Mekgoe’s replacement in due course.

Mekgoe currently serves as a member of Airports Company South Africa’s Group Executive Committee and he is also a member of the Group Operations Committee, amongst others. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, a Post-graduate Diploma in Management: Business Administration (Wits Business School), a  Diploma in Advanced Airport Operations (IATA Training and Development Institute - Montreal) and an Executive MBA from the UCT Graduate School of Business.
